Regulating Medicine
(Season 01 / Episode 08)

Dr. Jane Orient
Dr. Orient discusses her journey through medical school, her time at the VA and starting her own private medical practice. She's now the Executive Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. The organization is leading a lawsuit against the federal Department of Health and Human Services for making it more difficult for physicians to prescribe hydroxychloroquine.

The Conversation

A lot of things have changed in the practice of medicine. Independent physicians used to be in charge of their practice and the decision of what is best for their patients. A physician made all decisions about prescriptions to give to their patients. Bodies (such as FDA) could approve a drug’s safety but were not involved in how they are used after that.

Today, a drug has to take a two billion dollar journey to become approved.

Dr. Orient claims she has never seen this federal intervention level before.
